Mad Scientists

When we started Codegent we agreed that the idea of rolling out the same old stuff year on year seemed like a pretty dull proposition. So we decided that we would allocate time to experiment. Intellectually it seemed to be the right thing to do, even if commercially there were no immediate returns.

Innovation has become part of our makeup and our investment has more than paid for itself. We found ourselves way ahead of the game when it came to user-generated video, for example and this allowed us to beat off some much bigger agencies.

We're continuing our R&D and have now taken someone on full-time to help us drive our ideas. One of the highest profile initiatives was our technical director, Luke Hubbard's involvement on the Red5 project which facebook used for the self-record feature of its video application. This has enabled us to create our own innovative Media Delivery Platform.

Media Delivery Platform

Codegent's Media Delivery Platform allows you to stream audio, video and data to and from the flash plugin live and on demand so there is no need to wait for the progressive video to load, as you can experience the freedom of on demand streaming. Connect your webcam, and you can broadcast live or record video right from your browser.

This means that our clients can provide a much more professional video experience for their users. It also means that for user-generated video, the client can manage the look and feel of the player and the quality of the video. They can also control what branding the film has and any calls to action at the end (YouTube is great for guys uploading videos from their bedroom but it doesn't really work for brands).

Applications that we have already built include:

  • Beautifully crafted flash video players
  • User-generated video applications
  • "Citizen journalist" video upload and encoding tool
  • Video forums
  • Live multi-user video chatrooms
